When Kamal Haasan announced a few years ago that he was giving up his film career to focus on politics, there was a big disappointment. For not only was Kamal Haasan among India’s greatest actors of all time, his directing skills and his talent for writing screenplays were also outstanding. Also, as a producer, his Raj Kamal Films International supported some interesting attempts.
By chance, Kamal’s political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, did not do well in the elections (Lok Sabha, Assembly and Local Organs) it contested in Tamil Nadu.
At the event, at the height of the pandemic, Kamal announced last year Vikram, a film produced and starring him in the cast. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, who established himself through films such as Managaram, Kaithi, and TeacherVikram released on June 3rd.
The film, a brazen action artist, didn’t quite belong to the kind Kamal is known for. Kamal, the actor, willingly gave himself up to be molded by the sensibilities of the much younger Lokesh. Vikram, which also featured the very talented Fhadh Faasil, and Tamil actors Vijay Sethupathi and Surya (in a cameo), got a largely positive response.
But no one expected him to be the record-breaking (box-officer) he became.
Record price for Vikram on OTT
Vikram, while not exactly marketed as a pan-Indian film, turned out to be a big winner. Furthermore, it has had remarkable success in foreign markets where the Indian diaspora is in good numbers.
By many accounts, Vikram it is touted as the most successful Tamil film of all time (of course there are some caveats, as the financial success between seasons is impossible to compare). Anyway, Vikram is said to have hit bahubalione of the biggest box office hits of recent times, and entered the record books.
Vikram it is also said to have a sequel, and so the good race for Kamal must continue. Vikramwhich is Kamal Haasan’s 232nd film, was also shown to a select audience during the recent Cannes Film Festival.
Anyway, the moment Vikram became a hit, there were doubts about when it will be broadcast on OTT platforms. Being a hugely successful film, Vikram‘s arrival on a streaming site would always be a little delayed. Now, the Disney + Hotstar platform has officially announced that it will be streaming from July 8th.
Since Kamal already has an existing link to the Star network (he hosts the Big boss show in Tamil for them), Vikram would always be the baby of Disney+ Hotstar. Commercial sources claim that the OTT rights were fetched for Rs 200 crore, which is one of the highest sums for a Tamil film.
