One of the best VPN services on the market, NordVPN has just released a new feature that allows its users to create their own private network.
Instead of redirecting internet connections through a VPN server, Meshnet allows users to route their traffic through other devices through private, encrypted tunnels. This means NordVPN subscribers will be able to connect their own devices, family and friends all together.
“This feature release is a game-changer and will truly transform the way our users use NordVPN,” says Vykintas Maknickas, product strategist at NordVPN.
“Our product team has been working tirelessly for the past few years, which really started with developing our core technology – NordLynx – the foundation behind Meshnet that allows us to deliver amplified privacy solutions without sacrificing industry-leading speed.”
Meshnet is officially released today and will be available for all operating systems – from Windows, Linux and MacOs to Android and iOS smartphones.
How does NordVPN Meshnet work?
NordVPN Meshnet is a technology that will turn your own device into your personal private server. You will be able to connect to it no matter where you are in the world.
Meshnet is powered by the WireGuard-based NordLynx protocol to ensure your data is secure across all your connections and allows you to link up to 60 devices regardless of their location. For each device, you will have allocated a special IP address that will only work with Meshnet.
“All it takes is a NordVPN subscription,” explains Maknickas.
NordVPN claims that Meshnet will make creating your personal network very easy. First of all, you will need to enable Meshnet in your NordVPN app on every device you want to connect. At this point, you need to link your devices or send an invite to other NordVPN users. Enter the special IP to access your personal private server.
When should NordVPN Meshnet be used?
In theory, being able to build your own private network has several advantages, opening up new uses of VPN. For example, you might consider employing the Meshnet function to:
- file sharing: With Meshnet you will be able to share files among your family, friends and colleagues almost instantly without having to host them on a different server or cloud space.
- Games: Those looking to increase their gaming experience will be interested to know that Meshnet works like a virtual local area network (LAN). No matter where they are in the world, friends will be able to play multiplayer games together without needing LAN cables.
- virtual routing: Let’s imagine you’re on vacation abroad, but would like to browse through your own IP address anyway. While the normal NordVPN connection routes your internet traffic through its available servers, Meshnet lets you redirect your connection through the laptop you left at home.
